What makes this a "hormone balancing" hot chocolate?
My hot chocolate recipe combines several unique ingredients that each bring hormone boosting benefits. The base starts with one cup of steamed milk of your choice plus half a cup of water—you can use dairy, oat, almond, or whatever works best for your body.
Sleep and Stress Support
Half a teaspoon of the sleep support blend from Root & Bones containing glycine and saffron transforms this from a simple treat into a powerful evening ritual. Glycine is an amino acid that helps calm your nervous system and improve sleep quality, while saffron has been shown to support mood and can help with PMS symptoms.

Protein and Beauty Benefits
One scoop of Root and Bones collagen with tremella mushroom provides high-quality protein that supports stable blood sugar while also benefiting your skin and hair health. Collagen becomes especially important as we age and our natural production decreases.
Adaptogenic Mushroom Support
Half a teaspoon of the four-mushroom blend from Eversio Wellness containing maitake, reishi, lion's mane, and shiitake brings adaptogenic properties that support blood sugar balance, stress response, brain function, and even ovulation. These mushrooms work together to help your body manage stress more effectively.

Magnesium and Mood
One heaping tablespoon of raw cacao provides natural magnesium along with compounds that can positively affect mood. Unlike processed cocoa, raw cacao retains more of its beneficial nutrients and gives you that rich chocolate flavor you're craving.
Hormone Balance and Fertility
A serving of maca powder rounds out the hormone-supporting ingredients. Maca is an adaptogenic root that can help support libido, egg quality, and overall fertility. It has a slightly nutty, caramel-like flavor that pairs beautifully with chocolate.
Blood Sugar Balanced Sweetness
For sweetness, you can use manuka honey for its immune and gut-supporting properties, or coconut sugar as a more budget-friendly option. Both provide sweetness without the blood sugar spike you'd get from refined sugar.

Hormone Hot Chocolate Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup of steamed milk of choice plus 1/2 cup of water
1/2 tsp of sleep support from Root and Bones (includes glycine which is amazing for sleep and stress support and saffron which is amazing for mood and mental health, and also supports PMS)
1 scoop of Root and Bones collagen with tremella (amazing for protein, skin and hair health)
1/2 tsp of 4 mushroom blend from Eversio (maitake, reishi, lion's mane and shiitake) for blood sugar, HPA axis, stress, brain detoxification, mood, and ovulation support
1 heaping tablespoon of raw cacao which does have some magnesium in it
1 serving of maca which helps with libido, egg quality and fertility
Sweeten to taste - I typically do manuka honey because of the immune and gut support, but it's cheaper to use coconut sugar
Directions:
Add all ingredients to a pot on the stovetop over medium heat. Stir frequently until everything is completely combined and warmed through. Pour into your favorite mug and enjoy!
Create Your Evening Hot Chocolate Ritual
This hormone hot chocolate works so well as an evening drink because of the sleep-supporting ingredients. The combination of protein, healthy fats from any nut milk you might choose, and complex carbohydrates from the cacao and sweetener helps stabilize your blood sugar overnight.
The magnesium from the cacao, combined with the glycine in the sleep blend, can help your muscles relax and prepare your body for restorative sleep. The adaptogenic mushrooms and maca work behind the scenes to support your body's stress response and hormone production while you rest.
Plus, this hot chocolate recipe is so flexible. You can adjust the ingredients based on what you have on hand or what your body needs on any given day. Some nights you might want more maca for hormone support, other times you might focus on the sleep blend if you're feeling extra stressed.
You also don't need to make this every single night to see benefits. Even trying it a few times per week can be a great way to support your hormone health while satisfying your desire for something warm, comforting, and chocolatey.
