What Are Castor Oil Packs?

Castor oil packs are therapeutic wraps infused with castor oil's natural goodness, strategically placed over different parts of your body to work their magic. Basically, they’re a simple way to apply castor oil directly to your skin so that you can get all the amazing benefits.

I personally have the MTHFR gene mutation, so I regularly use castor oil packs to support my liver. I also notice that I sleep so well when I use them and my digestion is fantastic. You will have amazing bowel movements when you use castor oil packs!

There's research exploring the benefits of topical castor oil application if you want to dive deeper into the science. But I will say that while the studies are intriguing, remember that everyone's body is unique, so results can vary.

What Health Issues Can Castor Oil Packs Help With?

Castor oil packs are very versatile! Here's a closer look at the types of health benefits they can provide:

Liver Detox: My personal favorite! Castor oil packs have a secret weapon called ricinoleic acid, which gives your liver's detox process a helping hand. This is one of my favorite ways to support liver health and detoxification.

Relief from Pain & Inflammation: Castor oil packs are also known to provide relief from various types of pain and inflammation. They can be placed on areas of the body experiencing pain, such as sore muscles or joints, and the anti-inflammatory properties of castor oil will help to reduce discomfort.

Improved Circulation: The warm compress of a castor oil pack can promote blood circulation in the area where it's applied, reducing congestion, inflammation, and swelling.

Hair & Skin Care: Castor oil packs can also nourish your hair and scalp for a healthier mane. In addition, castor oil is rich in fatty acids and has moisturizing properties. When used in a pack, it can be beneficial for skin health. Some people use castor oil packs to address skin conditions like dryness, acne, or minor irritations.

Lymphatic Flow: The lymphatic system is crucial for immune function and toxin removal. Castor oil packs applied over lymph nodes stimulate lymphatic flow and support the immune system.

Relaxation and Stress Reduction: Applying a warm castor oil pack can be a soothing and relaxing experience. The warmth and the massaging effect of applying the pack can help reduce stress and promote relaxation.

Making Your Own DIY Castor Oil Packs

Making your own castor oil packs at home is a breeze. Here's how you can do it!

What You’ll Need

  • Organic flannel cloth

  • Organic castor oil in a glass bottle

  • A clean cloth

  • Optional: a heating pack

How to Make a DIY Castor Oil Pack

  1. Pour roughly 2 tablespoons of organic castor oil onto your flannel cloth. Keep it in the fridge for later use.

  2. Dress casually, because you might get some oil on your clothes.

  3. Find a comfy spot where you can lie down. Protect your furniture with an old sheet or cloth to prevent any oil stains.

  4. Place the castor oil-soaked cloth on the target area. For example, to support liver detoxification, place it over your liver. For digestive aid, place it over your abdomen.

  5. To keep things tidy, put a clean cloth on top of the castor oil pack.

  6. If you want, add a heating pad on top of the castor oil pack for even greater relaxation.

  7. Now, relax for 30 to 60 minutes with your castor oil pack. If you get comfy, you can even work up to sleeping with it on if you have a way to secure it (for example, wrapping a longer cloth or ace bandage around your body to keep it in place during the night.

Menstruation: It's often best to skip castor oil packs during your period.

IUD: If you have an intrauterine device (IUD), it's not the best idea to use castor oil packs. Always talk with your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
